Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-08-14
Lampio is a tool for learning English while you read. We believe the best privacy practice is to collect little and explain it clearly. This policy describes what data we collect, why, who we send it to, and how you stay in control.
It applies to Lampio for desktop (Windows / macOS), Lampio for mobile (Reading Vocab Helper, iOS / Android), the shared cloud backend they use, and this website, lampio.app.
Who is responsible for your data
This product is built and operated by the Lampio team. For any privacy question, contact us at nikos.lee.cn@outlook.com.
What we collect, and why
We only collect what the product needs to work:
- Account information: the email address you provide at sign-up (for login and cross-device sync).
- Your learning data: the words you save together with the original sentence you met them in, your reading notes and highlights, the addresses (URLs and domains) of pages you open/read, the sites and RSS feeds you save, and your review progress. This is used to sync your learning across your devices.
- Error diagnostics: when the app errors or crashes, technical information is reported automatically (error stack trace, app version, operating system). We have turned off default personal-data collection, so these reports do not include your login credentials, email, or account identity.
- Voice data: when you use read-aloud (TTS), the text to be spoken is sent to a speech service; when you use pronunciation scoring, your microphone recording is sent to a speech service to score your pronunciation.
- AI text processing: when you use lookup disambiguation, phrase highlighting, translation, sentence analysis, or example generation, the text you selected or its surrounding sentence is sent to an AI service to produce the result. The "AI context assistant" (lookup disambiguation and phrase highlighting) is on by default — while it is on, the relevant sentences are sent automatically when you double-click a word or open a page, without asking you each time. You can turn it off in settings at any time, after which nothing is sent. For this feature we send only those sentences, never the whole page.
- AI reading recap (only when you tap "Generate recap"): to write a short narrative recap of your past week of reading, we send that week's aggregate statistics (reading time, words read, number of reviews, and so on), the titles and site domains of the pages you read, and the new words you saved to an AI service. It happens only when you tap the button each time, never automatically in the background; article body text is not sent, and our servers do not store any of this content (only call counts and cost).
- Anonymous usage telemetry (only if you turn it on): content-free usage signals, such as how long a review card took or how many words you marked as known in a triage round. It carries a randomly generated anonymous id and does not include your account identity, page content, or the words/sentences you look up. Off by default; you can turn it on or off anytime in settings.
- Website analytics for this site: when you visit lampio.app we count page views, referral sources, approximate region, and device type, so we know how many people see the site. It uses no cookies, does no cross-site tracking, builds no user profile, and is not linked to your Lampio account. This concerns the website only and has nothing to do with what you read in the app.
We do not run ads, we do not do cross-site tracking, and we do not sell or rent any of your data. The anonymous usage telemetry above is off by default and only collected after you turn it on.
Where your data lives (local-first)
Most of Lampio's learning data is stored first in a local database on your own device. Only after you sign in — to enable cross-device sync — is that learning data transmitted to and stored in our cloud backend. If you never sign in, your data stays on your device.
Third-party services we use
To provide these features, we entrust the necessary data to the following third-party processors. Each only sees the minimum data needed for its function:
- Supabase (account & sync): stores your account email and the learning data that needs to sync across devices; if you enable anonymous usage telemetry, that anonymous data is stored here too.
- Sentry (error monitoring): receives technical crash/error reports used to find and fix problems; personal-data collection is turned off.
- Microsoft Azure (speech services): processes read-aloud text and pronunciation recordings, returning audio or a pronunciation score.
- AI text service (large language model): processes the text involved in lookup / translation / analysis / reading-recap requests you initiate, returning the result.
- Vercel (website hosting & analytics): hosts lampio.app and provides the cookie-free website analytics described above.
The servers of these services may be located outside your country or region.
Retention & deletion
Local data stays on your device with the app; you can delete words, notes, page records, etc. inside the app, or uninstall the app to clear local data.
Data synced to the cloud is retained until you delete it or delete your account. You can delete the corresponding items in the app, and the deletion propagates to the cloud; to delete your entire account and its cloud data, contact us at nikos.lee.cn@outlook.com.
Error-diagnostic data is retained only for a limited period, for troubleshooting.
Your rights
You have the right to know about, access, export, and delete your personal data. Most actions can be done directly in the app; for the rest, email nikos.lee.cn@outlook.com and we will act within a reasonable time.
Children
This product is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Types of data we collect (summary)
For quick reference, the data we collect falls into:
- Identifiers: email address (for your account).
- User content: saved words and their context sentences, notes, highlights, saved sites/feeds, addresses and titles of pages you read, and (for pronunciation) voice recordings.
- Diagnostics: crash and error logs (with no personal identity).
- Anonymous usage telemetry (only if you turn it on): content-free usage signals with a random anonymous id; off by default and can be turned off anytime.
